About Horace Graham
I am Horace Graham, and I dream in colors. My passion for design took root in the parish where I was born, Montego Bay Jamaica, where lush greenery, tropical beaches and mountain held bays shaped my sense of creativity. It is here as a boy I first experimented with drawing, the mixing of colors and the meanings of patterns. My dream was born, and a journey begun.
For many young Jamaican men, dreams fade too soon. My father left Jamaica to seek a better life for his family but never returned, my mother worked tirelessly to provide for us all, and poverty and hardship was simply a way of life. This is how dreams die.
With my dreams on hold, I resolved to support my family at age 19 with little education or work experience. The only job afforded to me on the island was in construction until 2006, when I landed a restaurant job in the U.S. I was the breadwinner for the extended family, now including my own children. All during this time my dream to be a designer still lived on within me, but my family came first, and I did not have the funds for any of the design schools I applied to.
2017 changed everything. After years of legal formalities and endless hurdles, I became a U.S. citizen, new doors would open. I made plans to return to Jamaica to visit family, especially my daughter stricken with cerebral palsy whom I hadn’t seen in 7 years as I worked stateside to cover her medical expenses. Mere months before my surprise visit, my daughter passed. Devasted beyond words, it took years to refocus, allow myself to dream again, and let my daughter be my guiding light.
My artistic energies would flow again. I designed with purpose and commitment, contemplating the potential every shape, color, texture, and pattern held for the shoe and clothing ideas within me. Further fueled by personally obtaining U.S. citizenship for my mother, brother, sister, and son, I launched my own design line to share my ideas and color palate with the rest of the world.
And they are starting to notice. Though greatly humbled by exposure in both Vogue Magazine and Harper’s Bazaar, I am truly excited about where I find myself on this journey. My dream is fueled by pure passion, and I will share my story of color and design by changing the game.
